Today, most people are incredibly busy going about their daily lives with work, family and social commitments. Sometimes a full day can go by without people really paying attention to anything. Instead they simply go through the motions. In this kind of world it could be argued that there is no longer a need for art.
Fortunately, the majority of people would argue differently. “Art” can be associated with art galleries which are enjoyed by many but also intimidating to many more and some can even find these places to be pretentious. Yet artwork is found everywhere we look; at home, in restaurants, offices and it comes in all different guises. People buy artwork in the form of paintings and such to bring a room to life. What better way to break up a plain wall than to place a beautiful painting in the centre of it?
There are many places to buy artwork from. EBay and Amazon have literally hundreds of pieces of art ranging from oil paintings of fruit bowls and panoramic views, to bold prints on canvas and even Japanese Manga art. Because of the wide variety on these sites, it easy to pick up a painting that friends and family won’t have hanging on their walls, and often at a bargain price. Alternatively, many people often make a surprise purchase of artwork when going about their everyday shopping. Most large supermarket chains have a “home and living” section in their main outlets and in these, numerous pieces of art can be found. As people are browsing they may decide that the set of 3 photo canvas prints would look super in the bathroom and just like that, a piece of art is bought. At the opposite end of the scale, there are the galleries and exhibitions that display unique pieces of art from both famous and less well known artists. These have a reputation for being expensive to buy from, but many consider the fact that a piece of art will last a lifetime and quite often gain value, as an investment. Then of course there are auctions across the country, which sell unique and sometimes famous pieces of art. These auctions are often filled with a buzz of excitement but as the prices can climb quite drastically, they are not for the faint hearted.
Of course there is also art that we need not pay for. Children will very often bring home their latest designs and paintings from school and many are instantly displayed as artwork on the fridge. Then there are the family photos taken on the digital camera, printed off at a shop or even a kiosk, framed and hung on the walls or placed on the mantelpiece for all to admire. These are all just as beautiful and unique as any artwork bought from an expensive gallery, some would say more so because they are so personal.
Many people do not see themselves as art gurus and yet they will take very special care in the way they buy artwork and display it at home. Just like the owner of a top art gallery. Art is very often, like music, not often thought about at all, yet it is featured in almost every aspect of life. It would be very hard indeed to picture a world without art of any kind.
